London Area Contests

On Saturday February 23rd Wimbledon hosted the finals of the London Area contests.
With a long club tradition behind them and great expectations on them, neither Alice nor Michael disappointed.
In a packed room, Alice (pictured with SE President Ian Price) won the speech contest for the second time in 3 years and Michael came out on top in the Topics contest.
Each will go on to represent London in the SE District Final in Maidstone on March 17th.

Wednesday 12th December

Congratulations to Alice on a very successful speaking month. Following on from her 3rd place in the Corporate Challenge Speaking Contest hosted at the English Speaking Union earlier in December, she has now been crowned this year’s Wimbledon Speech Champion, beating Alan Keegan narrowly into 2nd place at this year’s annual club contest. Chief Judge was former ASC National President, Gwyn Redgers, pictured here with Alice proudly receiving the trophy.
We wish Alice well as she moves on the the London Area Contest in the New Year. Wimbledon Speakers has a proud history of national champions and we hope that Alice can go one or even 2 steps better than her National Contest 3rd place 2 years ago.

Wednesday 14th November

This was one of our Powerpoint evenings. A valuable skill and very entertaining for the members of the club.
We were treated to 3 presentations. Claire’s colourful overview of her trip to China was very well received.
Alice used the medium of the slide presentation to present her Level 10 (Masterpiece) speech, which was very positively evaluated by Joseph.
So many congraulations to Alice for reaching another milestone. The third presentation was a semi- educational contribution by Michael – outlining the importance of not just knowing ‘what’ you want to talk about, but also ‘why’ you are talking about it.

December 12th (meeting after next) is Wimbledon’s annual speech contest.
Speeches of 6-8 minutes on the theme of:
‘Hard luck and hard work’
Over the last 12 years Wimbledon has produced 5 different National Finalists and 2 National Speech Champions.
So clearly we are doing something right.
