Impromptu Speaking: Thinking on Your Feet

You’ve probably been there: someone turns to you in a meeting or social event and says, “Would you like to say a few words?” Suddenly, your mind goes blank.

That moment — when you’re expected to speak without preparation — is where impromptu speaking skills come in. It’s one of the most valuable parts of public speaking, and one of the most enjoyable to practise at the Wimbledon Speakers Club.

What Is Impromptu Speaking?

Impromptu speaking means delivering a short, unprepared talk on a topic you’re given on the spot. At our London club, this happens during the “Topics” section of the evening — a fun, fast-paced segment where members take turns responding to prompts like:

  • “If you could travel anywhere in time…”
  • “What makes a great leader?”
  • “Describe your perfect weekend.”

It’s unpredictable, but that’s what makes it exciting — and the perfect way to learn how to think on your feet.

Why It’s So Valuable

Impromptu speaking isn’t just a club exercise. It’s a life skill. You’ll use it whenever you:

  • Answer questions in a job interview
  • Speak up in a meeting
  • Propose a toast
  • Join a discussion where ideas are flowing fast

When you can express yourself clearly in the moment, people see you as confident, composed, and credible.

Tips for Successful Impromptu Speaking

  1. Take a Breath Before You Begin

Don’t rush to fill the silence. Pause, smile, and give yourself two or three seconds to think.

  1. Start with a Simple Structure

A clear beginning, middle, and end helps you stay organised. For example:

  • Opening: Repeat or rephrase the topic
  • Middle: Give one or two examples or a story
  • End: Summarise your point or share a takeaway

  1. Keep It Personal

Relating the topic to your own experiences makes your response natural and authentic.

  1. Embrace the Fun

Nobody expects perfection. The audience wants to see your personality — not a polished script.

Build Confidence Through Practice

At the Wimbledon Speakers Club, impromptu speaking is a highlight of every session. Members often find that this part of the meeting builds confidence faster than anything else, because it trains you to stay calm and expressive in the moment.

Our next session is on Monday 1st December, and first-time visitors are always welcome to attend for free.
