Session Review: Finding Our Voice Wednesday 22nd October
Our latest meeting at The Wimbledon Speakers Club took place on a Wednesday evening — a slight change from our usual Monday slot — and it turned out to be one of our most energising sessions yet!
Led by Paul, the focus of the evening was on the voice — exploring how Power, Pace, Pause, and Pitch can transform even the simplest sentence into something engaging, expressive, and memorable.
We were delighted to welcome two first-timers, David and Shazia, who joined our warm and supportive group for their very first taste of public speaking in Wimbledon.
After brief introductions, we began our first exercise: taking a one-line statement and experimenting with where to pause. If a speaker didn’t quite hit the right rhythm or emphasis, they simply went again — with instant, constructive feedback from the group that helped everyone improve in real time.
Next, we moved on to a paragraph-reading challenge, starting deliberately boring and then ramping up the energy and emotion to make it come alive. It was a great way to understand the power of tone and vocal variety — and to have a few laughs along the way!
After a short break, we put everything into practice with a two-minute unscripted speech, weaving in the word of the day: “exhilaration.” (Although one of us may have gone slightly over the time limit — 4½ minutes, to be precise! 😅)
Throughout the evening, Iain gave thoughtful and encouraging feedback, while Liv, our Grammarian, highlighted clever turns of phrase and creative word choices. We ended the night buzzing with ideas — and plenty of that promised exhilaration!
🎃 Next Session: Monday 3rd November – Halloween Special on

Our next meeting will be held on Monday 3rd November at Wimbledon Library, and it’s going to be a Halloween special all about Gestures! Expect a lively and interactive evening exploring how movement, expression, and body language can elevate your delivery.
