The Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC)

What to Expect

At Wimbledon Speakers, we understand that the thought of speaking in front of a group can be daunting. That’s why we don’t expect you to speak at your first meeting. If you’re not ready, that’s okay. You’re welcome to observe and get a feel for our group without any pressure to participate. The best thing to do is get up and speak, and you will be encouraged. It does get easier, and improvement usually is rapid.

The group is a safe space to overcome your nerves about public speaking, where you will be helped and supported.

Remember – all members were once first-timers, so we have all been in the same shoes. We are also all still learning too.

Each meeting (typically) consists of –

Welcome and Agenda.

Icebreaker – each person stands up to speak on a topic for around 30 seconds. Commonly personal introductions.

Topics – each person stands up to speak on a decided topic. The aim is to talk for 2 minutes (as best as possible).

Evaluations – a positive, high-level evaluation of what went well and improvements for the future. 1-2 mins per person.

A learning exercise  – based on a specific speaking skill. For example – reducing “umms”, using pauses, different volumes, hand gestures.

Or delivery of a prepared speech by a member (usually 8-10 mins).

Topics – Another round of topics and evaluations (if time allows)

Group Admin and AOB.

There will be an Evaluator for each meeting who will evaluate the topics and speeches. This is a speaking skill in itself and is a fantastic way to learn and improve.
