Session Review – Speaking With Conviction – Monday 17th November
Our Monday 17th November session at the Wimbledon Speakers Club was another delicious evening of public speaking practice in Wimbledon, London, packed with humour, real progress, and supportive energy.
We began with a perfectly wintry icebreaker: “What is the coldest you’ve ever been?”
From Arctic holidays to freezing commutes in London, the stories were as entertaining as they were shivery.
The evening’s theme was Speaking With Conviction, and the first exercise brought it brilliantly to life. Each member took a simple statement and delivered it twice:
1️⃣ First in the most boring, dull, monotone way possible — intentionally flat, lifeless and “please make it stop.”
2️⃣ Then again, with maximum energy — using every tool we’ve been practising: power, pause, pitch, pace, gestures, structure, and authentic conviction.
After these two attempts, the audience jumped in with immediate, practical advice, meaning everyone improved right there and then — no waiting for the next session to level up.
In the second half, members had a couple of minutes to prepare before giving a 2-minute persuasive speech. Topics included:
- Why we should all work four-day weeks (Rachel)
- Exercise is overrated (Kate)
- Money cannot buy happiness (James)
Ben then provided feedback on each speech. A huge thank you to Paul for excellent grammarian duties and to Julia for keeping time beautifully.
We were thrilled to welcome Anna for her first session — and delighted to see Steph return for her second session. New and returning joiners are welcome at every session!
We look forward to seeing you all at our next Wimbledon Speakers Club session on 1st December
It was great fun! The immediate practical advice meant we saw each other improve instantly. Looking forward to the next session!
