Wimbledon Speakers Club all set to begin its 20th year!

wsc

The new term at Wimbledon Speakers Club is just around the corner with the first meeting after the Summer break to take place on Wednesday 13th September at 7.30pm. We look forward to welcoming both new and old friends back to the club as we embark on an exciting year ahead.

And as well as being an exciting year ahead, it is also a celebratory year as our club celebrates its 20th anniversary! Since 1998, we have welcomed hundreds of people through the door who have visited the club in order to develop both their confidence and skills in a variety of forms of verbal communication and public speaking in a fun, friendly and supportive environment.

As well as our typical meeting programme which covers improvised speaking, prepared speeches & speech evaluation, we also intersperse these with other word games, debates and other light-hearted entertainment, all of which helps to improve our public speaking skills. You never stop learning at Wimbledon Speakers Club! For those wishing to take part, we also run annual club competitions in the 3 key speaking disciplines of impromptu speeches, prepared speeches and speech evaluation, the winners of which go on to compete in the national competitions.

So whether you’re a total beginner or more advanced, no matter whether you’re preparing to give a speech at a wedding, a work presentation or just want to improve your overall speaking confidence, Wimbledon Speakers Club is for you!

Our meetings are held on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month at the William Morris Rooms (267, The Broadway, Wimbledon, SW19 1SD) from 7.30pm-9.30pm, so come along and see what we’re all about!

Annual Corporate Challenge Speech Contest

Dear WSC members and friends

Can I draw your attention to the annual Corporate Challenge Speech Contest that takes place each year at the English Speaking Union?

The final is not until December, however I do believe it would be a great opportunity for those looking to test and stretch themselves a little to actually take part in the event this year.

Details below.

….Why not give it a go?

This year’s speech title as you will see covers a wide enough area not to have to be totally business focussed. So a great opportunity!

College of Public Speaking – Corporate Challenge 2012

As the Autumn nights get cooler and the days grow shorter we once again look to the power of words to increase the warmth and light into our lives.

On Monday December 3rd, we are delighted once again to be hosting the final of the

2012 Corporate Challenge in conjunction with the English Speaking Union in their beautiful rooms in Mayfair.

The event will also be sponsored by Mintel (an international award-winning provider of consumer market intelligence)

The Heats for the contest will take place at Mintel’s London Headquarters:

Mintel Group Ltd.
11 Pilgrim Street,
EC4V 6RN

Heat 1 will be on Monday 12th November at 6.30pm

Heat 2 will be on Tuesday 13th November at 6.30pm

The theme of this year’s contest is:

‘Tough times never last, but tough people do’

(Robert Schuller)

We would love to welcome you and would be delighted if you were able to find the time to take part this year: whether with the lofty ambition of winning or simply to be able to share thoughts and ideas as part of a great speaking event.

Requirements:

Speech 5 – 6 minutes in length – based round this year’s theme
If there is anyone you can think of that you believe would also enjoy or benefit from the opportunity of taking part, do ask them to get in contact with me.

If you are interested for yourself or for someone else, or wish further information, please contact me directly at

michael@collegeofpublicspeaking.co.uk

Please get back to me to indicate which Heat you would like to take part in

(or if you are happy with either)

There will be different judges at the heats and at the final so that the impact of the speech – ‘Tough times never last, but tough people do!’ – will not be lost when delivered a second time.

There is no admission fee to the heats for speakers, guests and spectators.
Entrance to the Grand Final will attract a donation – £10 for contestants, guests and spectators – which constitutes a donation to the English-Speaking Union’s School’s Program.
Wishing the very best
Michael
