Club Championship competition 2012

Don’t forget on Saturday 25th Feb, William Morris House is hosting the annual Area Contests, so our recent winners from Wimbledon (Alice in Topics, Vanessa in Speech and Katherine in Evaluation) would love to see any supporters on that day. It’s an afternoon event starting at 2pm, its very light hearted and relaxed, and will offer an opportunity for some extra curricular speaking. Friendly and familiar faces in the audience are most appreciated on these occasions.

Sunday 13th March – SE District Finals

Alice performed wonderfully in the SE England District Final Speech Contest against a field which included 2 previous National Champions. She came through as the only woman in the competition to win her place in the National Finals on April 16th in Edinburgh. She has only been a club member for half a year!
In contrast Michael, a 2 times National Champion himself, will fly the flag for Wimbledon yet again in his 7th National Final in the Evaluation Contest.

February 9th London Area Finals

Congratulations to Alice. Having joined Wimbledon Speakers only a few months ago, she delivered a complete, note-free and polished performance in a field of 10 highly talented speakers to become this year’s London Area Speech champion. Philippe delivered an enthralling speech on the strange fascination of orbituaries, but the honours this time went to Alice. Michael backed her up in his usual efficient way, by winning the Evaluation Contest. Another noteworthy set of results for Wimbledon SC.

Competition National Champion April 26th 2010

It is a rare achievement to become National Speech champion once. Now for the first time in the history of the ASC the title has been reclaimed! Having been National Speech Champion in 2007, this year on April 24th Michael Ronayne (centre) became the first ASC speaker to go back and win it again. This is now the 4th time in the last 10 years that a member of Wimbledon Speakers has either won or been Runner up in the National speech final. Oh what a proud club we are!

Competition London Area Speech Contests February 17th 2010

Camden Speakers Club hosted a magnificent finals night. It was wonderful to see all the London area clubs so well represented. It created a vibrant atmosphere for the club contestants. A fantastic evening of public speaking turned into another fantastic evening for Wimbledon in particular, as between them Katherine and Michael won each of the 3 contests. Speaking contests take up only a very small part of the year, but they give our speakers the opportunity to test themselves in a more challenging environment and they are excellent for bringing all the clubs together . Nevertheless both Katherine and Michael will appreciate being back in the friendly ‘home’ surroundings of a normal Wimbledon club evening next week.
